ADMO, we multiply the hope

Enter into the worldwide network of donor bone marrow

It could probably be you that can save a human life. The life of a child, of a young man, of women and men that fight day after day against leukaemia. You could be the reason for their survival. Bone marrow is not the spinal cord therefore, donating it cannot disable or damage the donor. If you think that your donation and will to help isn't important because there are others next in line willing to become bone marrow donors, think again you might be the only one we are looking for and we need you.

ONLY 1 PERSON OUT OF 1OO.OOO IS COMPATIBLE WITH WHO IS WAITING FOR A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

A bone marrow transplant allows the possibility to heal serious diseases: types of leukemia, thalassemia, congenital immunodeficiencies as well as some cases of solid tumors. The compatibility between patient and donor is verified 1 out of 4 times within the family (brothers and sisters), but becomes very rare, about 1 out of 100,000, among non consanguineous individuals.

WHAT IS THE BONE MARROW
The bone marrow is not the spinal cord. It is a human tissue that is located in the bone cavities and its job is to produce and renew blood cells (red cells, white cells, platelets). It is taken from the pelvic bone or from peripheral blood, after appropriate treatment. The choice is determined by the availability of the donor and the indication of transplantation. Once the bone marrow is removed from the donor it will spontaneously reconstitute itself in 7-10 days.

HOW DOES TRANSPLANT TAKE PLACE
The patient awaiting transplant undergoes chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy with the aim to destroy all the bone marrow cells, including those that are sick. The bone marrow taken from the donor is then infused into the patient as a normal blood transfusion. The new bone marrow begins to produce new cells, usually in a variable period ranging between two and three weeks after the transplantation with good chances that the disease could be definitely defeated.

WHO CAN BECOME A DONOR
Healthy individuals between 18 and 35, having a body weight of over 50kg can be a bone marrow donor. You can be a possible donor up until the age of 55. To become a bone marrow donor, it is necessary to submit a blood sample (as in normal analysis). You do not need a medical prescription. After signing the subscription to the Italian Register of Bone Marrow Donors, the analysis results are placed in electronic records managed at a national level and linked with the International Register. Therefore, confidentiality is fully respected. Please contact your nearest ADMO office, www.admotoscana.it

A CHOICE CAN SAVE A LIFE
Only if there is compatibility with a patient, the donor will be called again. The initial subscription has only moral value. The potential donor can always retreat/refuse even at the last minute (It's easy toimagine the consequences of such behavior, especially for the patient). As we can see, a bone marrow donor is an atypical donor: he becomes a real donor only in the rare event of compatibility with a patient. Nobody knows when, nobody knows for whom. The free and anonymous availability of a bone marrow donor has no geographical limits: he/she becomes part of all the donors around the world. A bone marrow donor is one of the few donors that when he/she is called to give their availability, they are aware that they can contribute in the effort to save the life of an individual, often of a child.
